The Bowlesburg staff is constantly looking at ways to
improve education for your children. Dedicated teachers
at every grade level align their instruction to State
Standards and individualize their activities to meet
student needs. One example of this is the DIBELS
intervention groups. All first grade students have
thirty minutes of reading instruction (in addition to
classroom reading time) that is geared specifically to
skills that are not strength areas yet. The type of
instruction is based on an assessment (DIBELS) that is
given multiple times throughout the year. The students
are distributed among six "intervention" teachers on a
daily basis.
Assessment For Learning is another process being used
this year by a number of Bowlesburg teachers. Assessment
Of Learning refers to assessing how much our students
have learned in the past. Assessment For Learning is
assessment for the purpose of telling teachers how to
help our students learn more in the future. If the
principles of Assessment For Learning are used daily,
there is an improvement in student motivation and
academic performance. The principles are linked to
significant gains in achievement, especially for low
achievers.
Teacher's Role
- Teachers must know the State Standards.
- Teachers must understand how those standards
work in the curriculum to form the "scaffolding"
students will climb on their journey up to each
standard.
- Teachers transform classroom-level achievement
targets into student-friendly versions.
- Teachers transform the classroom targets into
high quality classroom assessments that accurately
reflect student achievement.
- Teachers use those assessments over time in
collaboration with their students to help motivate
them to keep learning.
Bowlesburg students have been contributing to making
our world greener through recycling. We are
collaborating with the Rock Island Regional Office and
other schools in the area through a grant designed to
allow us to recycle our paper and cardboard waste at
school. Every other week bins are picked up by Midland
Davis Corporation. The trash that we put out for our
regular school pick-up has been greatly decreased
because we are recycling our paper.
Our PTA at Bowlesburg has been very active and has
attempted to plan almost monthly activities for our
students. Some of the popular events this year have been
Fall Festival, Secret Santa's Shop, Movie Night, and
Skate Nights. Thanks, PTA members, for your continued
support and efforts. We are looking forward to our
yearly spring Carnival for the kids in late May.
