Our English Learner services include a broad spectrum of supports at all levels for our students.  Below are program descriptions for the various programs we currently offer, please contact the English Learner Services Director, Paul Southwell, for more information at psouthwell@emsd37.org or by calling 309-792-2887 extension 6.

 

Program Definitions

*Target languages for TBE are Arabic, Ewe, and Spanish

 

Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) Program

  • Elementary

    • Bilingual services are currently offered in Spanish
    • Self-contained classrooms use the same district approved curriculum as all other classrooms, teaching the same grade-level standards as all other classrooms.
  • Middle School

    • Bilingual services are currently offered in Spanish and Arabic
    • Students are placed in a cohort of students that may mix with children who only speak English moves throughout the building going to different teachers for different subjects.  The same curriculum and grade level standards are taught in these classes as in all other classes.
  • In all bilingual rooms part of the day is taught in the target language, and part of the day is taught in English.

    • Elementary - 50% of the day is spent in English and 50% is spent in the target language

    • Middle School - At least 25% of each core subject (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies) is taught in the target language with support in the target language available at all times.

  • In addition to English literacy, students are taught literacy in the target language.

  • Part of the Social Studies class is dedicated to teaching culture and history from countries that speak the target language.

 

Part-Time Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) Program - Elementary and Middle School

  • Students whose English language proficiency and general academic achievement indicate that they are able may participate in their regular classrooms with only a part of their day, determined by a team of educators, including the parents, spent in the TBE classroom.  

  • A small number of TBE Part-Time students may not receive any of the native language instruction at all, but rather will have it available to them as needed.  These children will be primarily served through English as a Second Language services.

 

English as a Second Language Program (TPI) - Elementary

  • Instruction using English as a Second Language methodology is given to students for part of their day, teaching through the same curriculum that students receive from their classroom teachers.

  • These services are typically provided within the child’s regular classroom, though at times a child may be removed from their classroom during times that the core curriculum is not being taught.

  • All services are provided in English.

 

English as a Second Language Program (TPI) - Middle School

  • Students are placed in classes with a teacher who is certified in ESL as well as a teacher who is certified in a core content area (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies).  If an ESL teacher is also certified in a core content area, they may instruct it on their own.

  • The same curriculum that is used for all students at that grade level is used to instruct English Learners in this program.

 

Newcomer Supports - All Levels

  • Students who are new to the English language at all levels will receive individualized attention and a program that is suited to their needs.  This program may focus on language development goals that are not typically found in the grade level curriculum until a student is ready to fully participate in their grade level curriculum. 

  • These services are typically offered only during a child’s first year of exposure to English.
