-Today’s moment in Black History is all about Glenview’s Mr. Komi Awuya. Mr Awuya is from Togo( West Africa). He has a Master’s Degree from the University of Benin in Togo. In Togo, he was a Philosophy and French teacher for more than 20 years. He has also been a soccer player. Mr. Awuya is the owner and CEO of his own brand, “Noblesse.” He leads by doing poetry on African culture roots. He is an author of a poetry collection, titled, “At the Heart of the Tumult / Black African Poetry that was published in France in 2016. HIs Black History Heroes are Countee Cullen, Marcus Garvey, and Leopold Sedar Senghor. Mr. Awuya’s most powerful advice for the future of our students is to learn respect and responsibility early in life because these are behavior skills that will take you a long way.

On February 13, 2022, at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, Erin Jackson made history by becoming the first Black woman to win an Olympic gold medal in speed skating. -Today in Black History, we celebrate Surya Bonaly, a world-famous figure
skater who made history with her power, strength, and courage. Born in
France, Surya won multiple European titles and competed in three Winter
Olympics. Surya is especially known for landing a backflip on one blade
during the 1998 Olympics — something no other Olympic figure skater had ever done! Even when judges didn’t always reward her bold style, she stayed confident and true to herself.
